Old Newspaper Stand

An ancient wrought iron shrine

On July 2, 1882, Mr. Ulisse Sicola, from Mantua, was granted permission to build a neo-Gothic style wrought iron newspaper kiosk in Piazza Mantegna. It was moved to Piazza Canossa in 1925 so as not to interfere with the view of the Basilica.’Old Newspaper Stand It continued to function as a newsstand until the early 2000s. The last and only surviving example of the many that once animated the city, it has been owned by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) since 1992; it currently hosts temporary exhibitions.
