Bonacolsi Tower

Where once was the port

In 1280, Pinamonte Bonacolsi had not yet taken possession of the Acerbi palace and tower (Torre della Gabbia). He therefore decided to build this tower on the banks of the Ancona di Sant'Agnese, the city's most important port, which corresponds to today's Piazza Virgiliana. Originally, the waters of the Mincio entered the city, forming an inlet that reached approximately halfway along Via Cavour and joined the Fossato dei Buoi (now Via Accademia).

Even today Bonacolsi Tower It is easily identifiable and visible. Its appearance is that of a solid brick construction with crenellations on the top.
