Birthplace of Giuseppe Ottolenghi

Senator and Minister of War

Near Palazzo Forti, on the corner of Via Vespasiano Gonzaga and Via Stamperia, is the birthplace of Giuseppe Ottolenghi (Sabbioneta 1838 – Turin 1904). He was the first Italian Jew admitted to the Piedmontese army's officer training course and took part in the wars of independence in 1866. He rose through all stages of his military career, reaching the rank of general of the army corps. In 1902, he was appointed senator and minister of war in the Zanardelli government (1902-1903).

The house, whose original core dates back to 1585, hosted during the summer months the writer Ippolito Nievo, a close friend and schoolmate of Emanuele Ottolenghi, Giuseppe's brother.
