Roman House

The Roman mosaic in Piazza Sordello

The splendid Roman mosaic located in Piazza Sordello is proof that Mantua was not only already inhabited in Roman times, but that it must have been an important settlement. The style of the floor of the Roman House The care and attention to detail in its construction suggest the house was once the villa of a very wealthy family. Indeed, for the Romans, mosaics were a sign of great wealth. Furthermore, this particular type of mosaic, so fine and intricate, was certainly among the most expensive.

If we notice the face of the male character depicted below, we can see how it even gives the perception of volume and shadows, almost three-dimensional, suggesting the hand of high-level craftsmen.

Next to the mosaic of the Roman House You can see the remains of a church built in the Middle Ages. The foundations were laid by breaking the mosaic itself, which shouldn't be surprising considering it will take another thousand years to fully appreciate the past as a value to be preserved.
