Where faith arose, history passed: today memory remains
The ex Convent of San Domenico It was built in the 13th century and closed to worship in 1797, when with the Napoleonic suppressions many monasteries or convents were transformed into prisons, schools or warehouses.
After the suppression, part of the area was demolished and other areas were repurposed. The church was converted into a military warehouse and the convent into barracks. During the Austrian period, the entire space was converted into a political prison, where many of the key figures in the Belfiore conspiracy passed through.
For urban redevelopment purposes, the church and convent of San Domenico were completely demolished in 1925. Today, only the bell tower on the Lungorio remains of the Dominican convent, but part of its history can be traced through ancient documents and museum collections in the city.
