A dam between Lake Middle and Lake Superior
Mantua is surrounded by three lakes. They are the result of the reclamation and flow regulation project of the Mincio River designed by the engineer Alberto Pitentino in 1190.
The Mill Bridge It is actually a dam that divides Lake Superior from Lake Middle, allowing the water level to be lowered by three meters.
It owes its name to the twelve mills located inside the bridge's roof, which exploited the force of the water, generated by this difference in height, to grind. The original bridge no longer exists, having been bombed during the Second World War, but the hydraulic system is still the same as it was a thousand years ago and continues to be a fundamental element of Mantua's water regulation system.
