Observatory

The sky of Mantua since 1828

The Specola is a rectangular tower located in the Palace of Studies From here, you can see Mantua from above. Between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, it was identified in documents as Specola, or observatory, because it was used to study the sky with optical instruments.

Since 1828 it has housed a meteorological station which, a rare thing, has preserved data and measurements from then to the present day with only two interruptions, in 1881 and during the Second World War. It was recently awarded the recognition of "“Centenary Meteorological Observatory” by the World Meteorological Organization, a United Nations agency.
