San Giorgio Bridge

The ancient covered bridge of Mantua

The St. George's Bridge It divides the Middle Lake from the Lower Lake and was built to connect the village of San Giorgio to the city. During the Gonzaga reign, it served primarily defensive purposes and was covered, as can still be seen on a plaque preserved in the Palazzo Ducale and in Andrea Mantegna's painting "The Death of the Virgin," exhibited in Madrid.
