{"id":2766,"date":"2025-02-19T14:57:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-19T13:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.mantovasabbioneta-unesco.it\/?post_type=poi&#038;p=2766"},"modified":"2025-11-21T12:47:03","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:47:03","slug":"sparafucile","status":"publish","type":"poi","link":"https:\/\/mantovasabbioneta-unesco.it\/en\/poi\/sparafucile\/","title":{"rendered":"Sparafucile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Rocchetta where Verdi found his stage<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rocchetta di San Giorgio, also known as Sparafucile, is all that remains of the fortifications of the Borgo di San Giorgio that once stood at the eastern end of the bridge of the same name. It owes its fame to <strong>Giuseppe Verdi<\/strong>, who imagines it as the location for the Sparafucile inn in his work \u201c<strong>Rigoletto<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rocchetta was built in the second half of the 14th century under the rule of Ludovico I Gonzaga, along with the walls of the Borgo di San Giorgio. The massive tower dates back to the 15th century and can be admired against the backdrop of Mantegna&#039;s Death of the Virgin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Napoleonic era, as part of the plan to strengthen the city&#039;s defenses, the demolition of the walls of the ancient village was ordered, with the exception of the Rocchetta, which was incorporated into the system of lunettes, bastion structures defending the Ponte di San Giorgio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 19th century, when Mantua was one of the strongholds of the Habsburg Quadrilateral, there were three lunettes in total: that of San Giorgio, demolished after the First World War to allow for the city&#039;s development, that of Fossamana, and that of Frassino, which still stand.
