{"id":3082,"date":"2025-03-03T11:27:20","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T10:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.mantovasabbioneta-unesco.it\/?post_type=poi&#038;p=3082"},"modified":"2025-11-28T10:03:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T09:03:02","slug":"porta-imperiale","status":"publish","type":"poi","link":"https:\/\/mantovasabbioneta-unesco.it\/en\/poi\/porta-imperiale\/","title":{"rendered":"Imperial Gate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>The door of the duchy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1577, Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg raised Sabbioneta to the dignity of duchy, granting Vespasiano Gonzaga the privilege of a personal coat of arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nomination as Duke offers Vespasiano the emancipation from his cousins in Mantua, and for this reason in 1579, he decides to build <strong>Imperial Gate<\/strong>, a more majestic access, which completes the city walls and which will face east, precisely towards the Duchy of Mantua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A door worthy of a duke, or perhaps, of a <strong>emperor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facade of <strong>Imperial Gate<\/strong> It is imposing and majestic, and is entirely covered in rusticated white marble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has three vaulted openings, once equipped with two drawbridges, one of which was accessible to vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tympanum is the result of a 19th-century architectural addition, which replaces the original, which is entirely similar to the one at Porta Vittoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plaque on the main entrance reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>VESPASIANVS D(ei) G(ratia) DVX SABLONE TAE PORTAM HANC IMPERIALI NOMINE DECORATAM CONSTRVENDAM CVRAVIT ANNO SALVTIS MDLXXIX <\/em>(Vespasiano, Duke of Sabbioneta by the grace of God, promoted the construction of this gate decorated with the imperial name in the year of grace 1579).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with Porta Vittoria, this epigraph is also signed by the ducal coat of arms in marble, with the double-headed eagle and the motto LIBERTAS, freedom. It is the coat of arms granted by\u2019<strong>Emperor<\/strong> to Vespasian who represents independence from the Gonzagas of Mantua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images
