THE'United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization<\/strong>, was founded in London on 16 November 1945. Immediately after the end of the Second World War, during a United Nations conference, delegates from 44 nations decided to create an organization that would embody an authentic culture of peace and, by promoting solidarity among men, would prevent the outbreak of a new world conflict.<\/p>\n

As a specialized organization of the UN, UNESCO was born, as stated in its Constitution, from the common purpose of "\u201ccontribute to peace and security by promoting cooperation among nations through education, science and culture in order to ensure universal respect for justice, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms which the Charter of the United Nations recognizes for all peoples, without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

THE'Articles of Association<\/strong> It entered into force the following year, on November 4, 1946, after being ratified by 20 states. UNESCO currently has 195 member states and 8 associate states. Italy has been a member since 1947.<\/p>\n

One of UNESCO's main missions is to identify, protect, safeguard and transmit to future generations the world's cultural and natural heritage.<\/p>\n
