The Mantua-Sabbioneta cycle path

The area between Mantua and Sabbioneta is dotted with small capitals Gonzaga: ancient villages where the minor branches of the family settled with urban planning and artistic interventions that still today testify to the greatness of the Gonzaga family.

There Mantua-Sabbioneta cycle path It passes through these villages and connects the two cities of the UNESCO site via a flat and easy-to-follow cycle-tourist route, approximately 45 kilometers long.

Starting from Te Palace (Mantua) The route winds through the Gonzaga villages and the fascinating landscapes present between the floodplains of the Oglio and Po rivers, whose shape, history, economy and cultural identity have been shaped by water.

The itinerary lasts 2 days.

Day 1: Departure from Mantua and arrival in Sabbioneta. 

Length: 45 km

Follow the path towards Sabbioneta, cross Buscoldo and continue until Torre d'Oglio, where you can stop to take a photo in front of the charming pontoon bridge. Continuing on to San Matteo delle Chiaviche take a break and visit the documentation center of the’Ecomuseum Lands of Water between Oglio and Po”. Then continue For Message, where the horizon stands out Tower erected by Vespasiano Gonzaga. 

To get to Sabbioneta, passes by the bridge of boats on the Navarolo, where you can intercept a defensive system, called the arginelli. 

Before arriving at your destination, we recommend a stop at Villa Pasquali, where you can visit the imposing CChurch of Sant'Antonio Abate, part of the Vespasiano Gonzaga Museum Center. Finally enter in Sabbioneta crossing the Imperial Gate. 

Day 2: Departure from Sabbioneta and arrival in Commessaggio. 

Length: 37 km

From Sabbioneta it is possible to head towards Rivarolo Mantovano, Cocoon, San Martino dall'Argine Then it returns to Commessaggio, crossing territories transformed by the Gonzagas. In Rivarolo Mantovano, the urban layout defined by Vespasiano Gonzaga is still visible, with the city walls enclosing the entire town and the town square with the imposing Palazzo Pretorio. In Bozzolo, the remains of the ancient Gonzaga walls extend for 900 meters. In San Martino dall'Argine, however, the porticoes, along with the Castello Church, demonstrate the magnificence and importance of the Gonzaga family. 

Alternative 

Day 2: Departure from Gazzuolo and arrival in Torre dell'Oglio. 

Length: 19.4 km

From San Martino dall'Argine it is possible to head towards Gazelle And San Matteo delle Chiaviche until you reconnect to Torre d'Oglio, on the main route. Leaving San Martino, with its arcades, the Castello Church and the silent little squares you come to Gazelle, whose porticoes, once again, denote the close connection with the Gonzaga family. The detour reconnects with the main route towards Torre d'Oglio with its characteristic pontoon bridge.

​​Bike&Bus: leave by bike, return by bus!

At the end of the second day, those wishing to return to Mantua by bus can use the bike&bus service, active from March to November.
