The Jewish community played a very important role in the economic development of the sixteenth century.

The first Jews arrived in the city as early as 1436, but it was under the rule of Vespasiano Gonzaga that their presence found particularly favorable conditions. At a time when papal bulls promoted the segregation of Jews into ghettos, Vespasiano allowed Jewish families to settle freely within the city, without imposing any form of separation.
