Ducal Square

Center of the Prince's public life

As well as being a centre of political and administrative power, Ducal Square It is the site of the market, and therefore of trade and commerce. It has a perfectly rectangular shape and overlooks some of Sabbioneta's important buildings. The Palazzo Ducale served as a representative palace and residence for the Duke, and was once connected by overpasses to adjacent buildings, including Palace of the Light Cavalry, in which the auxiliary offices were located. In two rooms of the palace, Vespasian had the "Libreria Grande" placed, a library unfortunately now completely lost, which housed the works of classical authors and modern treatises on urban geometry and military engineering. 

In the vicinity of Ducal Palace

Behind a Ducal Palace it is located there Church of the Blessed Virgin Crowned, mausoleum of the Gonzaga family. Among the noble buildings, is located the Church of Santa Maria Assunta; in the immediate vicinity is the small Church of San Rocco. At the ground floor level of the private buildings, there is a long portico with rusticated white marble ashlar where the market was held.
