The case study MANTUA AND SABBIONETA. A process of belonging and appropriation by the community
As part of the project Mobartech, the case study Mantua and Sabbioneta It has provided the opportunity to initiate a process of community ownership and ownership that fosters respect and care for architectural and landscape assets that, while a regular feature of our daily lives, are not always perceived as exceptional cultural heritage.
The team of the Department of Human Sciences for Education "Riccardo Massa" of the University of Milan-Bicocca was engaged, in collaboration with the’Mantua and Sabbioneta World Heritage Office (UNESCO), in a process of collecting and reorganizing citizen testimonies using different methodologies and actions, which ultimately resulted in the creation of a heritage interpretation kit capable of stimulating a participatory, sensorial, and emotional enjoyment of the heritage.
From a disciplinary perspective, the complexity of the heritage has necessitated the involvement of heterogeneous topics: from geography to soundscapes, from autobiography to outdoor education, from landscape architecture to videomaking, from art history to contemporary artistic production, from art education and pedagogy to that of the body.
Get your bearings. Get disoriented. Explore. Taste. Discover.
The kit developed with the students of the Pitentino and Bonomi Institute of Mantua and IC Marcaria – Sabbioneta, the patients of the Mental Health Day Centre of Mantua 1 and numerous citizens (experts, amateurs, professionals, citizen activists), changes the paradigm of approach and mediation of heritage.
The effort was to start from scientifically validated sources that would induce the public to work on building new knowledge to make available to other audiences.

The aim of the kit is to enhance the urban context as a place of relationship between cultural heritage and the values, traditions and stories of a community.
The kit consists of tools that can be used in a variety of ways and with different skill sets, making it suitable for both children and adults, independently and without the assistance of a specialized facilitator. At the same time, it is the ideal tool for encouraging and proposing workshop activities led by specialized teachers and operators.
